Week 5!

Hey all!

Welcome back to my blog! It's hard to believe it's already week 5! Thank you for continuing to follow me on my journey! This past week I finally got a formulation for my lip balm that I am happy with! After tweaking the formulation, researching more ingredients, and experimenting, I created my overnight lip treatment.

With a spicy scent, this lip treatment is packed full of antioxidants to protect against free radicals, as well as being full of luscious hydrators to keep your lips soft. A couple ingredients I would like to highlight would be hyaluronic acid and sepilift (a protein complex). Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water and raises moisture in the lips, it's one of my favorite and most intriguing ingredients! And sepilift dphp provides a triple firming action with collagen fiber contraction, protection of dermal supporting tissue, and anti-radical action all while plumping the lips.

(for those who love science, do you see all the places water can bond to!?)

My product is completely natural too which allows the ingredients to be absorbed and used super easily and efficiently in our bodies. I have been asking a bunch of people how they like the product and for the most part, they love the feel, especially in my last batch which is awesome to hear! I definitely like where I'm at now, but of course there is room to grow, so we are just going to make some tweaks by helping the pickup out of the container, so consumers can get more product easily and make it more like a lip butter instead of a lip balm, since it is a lip treatment.

I'm looking forward to finalizing my product in the next few weeks and now I'm onto creating a cleanser as well as still working on marketing projects for a dermatology products company!

Have an awesome week!

  1. Hi Lauren! Congratulations on almost finishing your lip butter. I actually use a moisturizer on my face that contains hyaluronic acid, and even take joint supplements that contain hyaluronic acid. With such a variety of important uses, is hyaluronic acid very expensive? Over to the marketing side of your project, if hyaluronic acid is expensive and you were to sell your lip balm, how would you market it so people would buy your product? Thanks.

    1. Hi Olivia! Thank you! Woah that is so cool! Hyaluronic acid is actually super expensive, but it's active at low levels which is perfect! I would be marketing it as a lip treatment that not only penetrates deeply, but also protects your lips on all levels of the antioxidant spectrum. Skinceuticals acutally sells one for $38! Have an awesome week!

  2. Hey Lauren! Sounds like you made a lot of progress on your lip butter this week! You said that your product is made of all natural ingredients- is this different than most other lip butter companies? As in, do most other companies use some unnatural ingredients? And if so, is this going to be a key part of the price at which you market your product, since natural ingredients are more expensive?

    1. Hey Annalise! Most companies are completely unnatural. In fact, I had to create my own formula to make it natural because most use petrolatum, and beeswax is also taking a large hit from media because more media is coming out with campaigns to protect the bees. For sure! Natural ingredients do make it more expensive, but also so much better for your body. :D

  3. Hi Lauren! It's so exciting to see how you've improved your original formula to make one that satisfies all of your original goals! You said that your lip treatment is overnight; does it moisturize your lips enough to not require reapplication, or is it best used by reapplying throughout the day as well? Also, when marketing the lip balm, what aspect of its ingredients of benefits do you plan to focus on? Thank you!

    1. Hi Esha! Thanks! Yes! After thinking and reading some articles, I will market it as a lip treatment to put on 2 times per day, once after each time you would wash your face, typically in the morning and before bed. And after you would put it on in the morning, you should put on another lip balm or lip stick with an SPF to protect the lips from the sun's rays too!

  4. Hi Lauren! It's amazing that you've made such great progress with your lip treatment! I noticed you said it has specifically natural ingredients. How will this affect your ability to market the product? Have you noticed any clear trends among major lip treatments in terms of their natural/unnatural ingredients, and if so how do those compare to your own ingredients? How would you successfully market the product considering it would likely be "more expensive" due to the natural ingredients? Thanks!!

    1. Hey Bobby! I would focus on the 'natural' aspect a lot because it does increase the price point. Most natural products are a part of earthy brands, but there are not a lot of natural lip moisturizers out there which is why I am super stoked about my product! I will definitely focus on the fact that it is natural and how it covers the entire antioxidant spectrum.

  5. Lauren! Looks like you're product is coming along quite well. What makes a product, such as lip balm like yours, natural vs. unnatural? What ingredients make this so? We're halfway there! So keep working hard!

    1. Hey Spencer! Natural products must fully contain natural ingredients determined natural by the government and sometimes governments from outside the country. Yes!! Thank you you too!

  6. Hi Lauren! It's so cool to see your product develop! You mentioned your product has a spicy scent. What would a spicy scent be? Also, you said your lip butter is an overnight treatment. How do you think that will affect marketing and its popularity gains since people wouldn't be showing it to friends while reapplying during the day? Thank you!

    1. Hey Nitya! It's actually thieves essential oil! Ooh that is a very interesting comment! I would hope that people notice such a difference in their lips like I have and maybe mention it in conversation. But also, I would do a ton of integrated marketing!

  7. Hi Lauren! It's so exciting how you are already almost finished with your lip product. My questions are about the marketing side of dermatology products. Do dermatology companies focus first on making the product and then marketing the product or do they see what the consumers look for and then make the product? Or is it both? Also in other markets, there has been a general trend of moving to organic products if the consumer is able to afford it, is it the same with dermatology products. Has there also been a general trend toward natural ingredients or no? Thanks!

    1. Hi Christina! Totally both! You create the marketing story while you're creating the product so you can use specific ingredients. Great question! :D There has not been a huge trend towards natural ingredients in the dermatology industry, but people definitely want natural ingredients so hopefully with a natural product that works just as well or even better, it competes, and being natural adds on an edge!

  8. Hi Lauren! It is so good to hear that your lip product is a success! You mentioned that your product has a spicy scent. What inspired your scent choice? Also, will your cleanser have the same scent? Congratulations on your lip butter, and good luck on the rest of your journey!

    1. Hey Divya! Thank you! It is inspired by an essential oil! My cleanser may have the same scent, but I kind of want an unscented wash since it will be all over the face. Thank you! Have an awesome week!

  10. Hey Lauren! That picture of the molecular structure of Hyaluronic Acid made it easy to see why it would be perfect moisturizer for the lips! Are you still tweaking your lip product or just the container, packaging, etc.?

  11. Hey Justin! I am still tweaking the formula, and I made one I really like on Tuesday! Now I'm working on the brand name and packaging!
